As a human being with a functioning brain (as evidenced by your reading this), you have a philosophy - or perhaps multiple competing and inconsistent philosophies. You cannot evade the fact that you have such a philosophy, or that you need one to live. A philosophy is at the core of your beliefs, your opinions, and the way you react to the events that unfold around you, whether this underlying influence is conscious on your part or not. My purpose in this section of my page is to explore philosophy in general, and the philosophy of Objectivism in particular, both for the benefit of anyone who might read it and for my own benefit in clarifying my knowledge and my thinking. Philosophy ranges from metaphysics ("what is existence?") through epistemology ("what is man's relationship to existence"), to ethics, politics, and finally esthetics. Errors or inconsistencies in the bedrock of philosophical thought will manifest themselves in the derived beliefs, such as politics; hence, it is necessary to start from the abstract concepts within metaphysics in order to construct a clear ethical or political stance. Objectivism is the philosophy created and espoused by Ayn Rand. Rand was a writer, first of fiction, then of nonfiction as she explored her philosophy in ever greater detail. She became a "philosopher", albeit an unconventional one, as she worked to develop her ideas about man, existence, ethics, and apply them to the problem of man, living life, on earth. In my opinion she was the most important intellectual of the 20th century, and her legacy of reason, and a rational approach to living life on earth, is one to be admired. Core Philosophy Topics
